BUSINESS SUMMARY
President and C.E.O. of Cando Contracting Ltd. - Brandon, Manitoba
President of Cando Contracting Inc. (US Operations) - Adel, Iowa
President of Central Manitoba Railway Inc. - Pine Falls/Winnipeg/Carman, MB
President of Cando Rail Services Ltd – Vaughan ON.
In 1978 a fledgling company began operations with two employees, a tractor and front-end loader and a contract to tear up a rail line in the Tilston area. Today Cando Contracting Ltd. is a corporation employing a team in excess of 275 energetic and enthusiastic people with contracts to remove, construct, and maintain rail lines across Canada and into the United States, with an equipment pool that includes everything from pickup trucks to locomotives. Today, Cando’s equipment fleet exceeds $40 million in value and annual sales of the company are approximately $50 million.
Cando Contracting Ltd. started the first privately owned short line railway in Manitoba. A new company, Central Manitoba Railway Inc., was created by Cando to operate the newly acquired short line, which extends from Pine Falls to Carman, Manitoba. Besides the ongoing railway contracts that have been the foundation of Cando’s growth and success, the company has expanded into full-service switching contracts for Kosa Canada in Kingston, Ontario, a contract to operate a short line between Barrie and Collingwood, Ontario, and a contract with Magna International in St. Thomas, Ontario, to load and switch automotive frames on railcars for various Class I rail carriers. This operation handles some 12,000 carloads per year. All of the Ontario operations are managed from a branch office located in St. Thomas, Ontario.
Cando Contracting Ltd. has maintained its corporate services office in Brandon, MB. Cando is continually attracting and hiring new people. Gord’s philosophy has always been to “buy locally” and does so whenever possible. Many local businesses have sold trucks, construction equipment, building materials and office supplies to Cando.
Gord realized many years ago that the strength and future of any company is the people within that organization. In 1996, with this in mind, Gord approached the Crocus Investment Fund of Winnipeg with the idea of establishing an Employee Ownership Program. With assistance from Crocus, Cando now has 150 + employees who are also corporate shareholders. This program has developed a very strong team at Cando that believes in themselves and their communities, and are prepared to invest in their own future.
Gord Peters has seen many changes in the railway industry but he is very excited about the challenges to come and the future of Cando. Gord’s dynamic personality and entrepreneurial spirit will allow him to meet and conquer those challenges.
Gord’s Moto Is The Same Today As It Was In 1978 - “CAN-DO”.
